Could you walk away from $23 million? That’s exactly what John Salmons just did. There was a proposed trade being setup between the Toronto Raptors and Philadelphia 76ers. However, Salmons decided he did not want any part of it. According to his agent, Joel Bell, “Upon reviewing the basketball situation in Toronto, John decided it’s not the best fit for him.”
That basically means that Salmons doesn’t want to be stuck playing in Canada, which is a sentiment shared by many NBA players. The rest of the talk is simply politeness. The Raptors were trying to get Salmons on a sign and trade deal with the 76ers. The deal would have been over five years and paid $23 million. Salmons also decided he didn’t want to play for the Suns. I don’t think anyone knows what Salmons wants, including Salmons.
The 76ers were going to get a second round draft pick in 2007 for Salmons. It looks like they are still trying to move the 6-foot-6 guard. The $23 million would have been a nice upgrade. Salmons made about $2 million last year and that’s about all he can hope for this season if he stays with the 76ers.
