NCAA Changes Key Rule

The NCAA committee has changed a rule that will not only impact the game of college basketball; it will affect basketball bettors—especially those who don’t keep up with changes.

Over the past two decades we’ve enjoyed watching 3-point shots being taken at will in NCAA basketball. Starting with the 2008-09 basketball season, the 3-point shot will be longer.

The NCAA committee has decided to move the 3-point line back to 20 feet, 9 inches. The change brings the line back one foot from its current position.

While I think that many great 3-point shooters will adjust, I do think this rule change will hamper the borderline 3-point shooters.

The main purpose of this move is to lengthen the floor and open up the game a little.

We should see good 3-point schools continue to utilize the 3-point shot as a focus point in their game. But, this is a rule that could impact games. We’ll see.

Speculation is that we’ll see more zone defense in 2008-09. It’s going to be an exciting season.
