The NBA draft went down today in New York. There were a couple minor surprises, but everything went somewhat as planned. For me, the most shocking selection was number 10 Seattle. Here are the top 15 picks from the 2006 NBA draft.
(1) Toronto Raptors select forward Andrea Bargnani from Italy.
(2) Portland Trailblazers select forward LaMarcus Aldridge from Texas. This was a trade with Chicago.
(3) Charlotte Bobcats select forward Adam Morrison from Gonzaga.
(4) Chicago Bulls select forward Tyrus Thomas. This was a trade with Portland.
(5) Atlanta Hawks select forward Shelden Williams from Duke.
(6) Minnesota Timberwolves select guard Brandon Roy from Washington.
(7) Boston Celtics select guard Randy Foye from Villanova. It’s being reported that he is being traded to Portland.
(8) Houston Rockets select and trade forward Rudy Gay form Connecticut to Memphis.
(9) Golden State Warriors select center Patrick O’Bryant from Bradley.
(10) Seattle Sonics select center Mouhamed Saer Sene from Senegal.
(11) Orlando Magic select guard J.J. Redick from Duke.
(12) New Orleans Hornets select forward-center Hilton Armstrong from Connecticut.
(13) Philadelphia select guard Thabo Sefolosha from Switzerland. The rights were traded to the Chicago Bulls.
(14) Utah Jazz select guard Ronnie Brewer from Arkansas.
(15) New Orleans Hornets select forward Cedric Simmons from N.C. State.
It was the night of the forward. 9 of the 15 players selected in the top 15 were forwards. There was some moving and shaking on draft night as expected. Now we get to see how these selections shape up. The Seattle pick baffled most analysts. It was unexpected and not too much is known about Sene. Evidentially the Sonic loved his workouts and decided to pick him up. One has to wonder if they could not have taken him later.
