With the writing on the wall, the Detroit Pistons are moving forward to life without Ben Wallace. Ben Wallace is expected to sign a four-year deal with Chicago Bulls next week—when signing can be officially completed. According to the Associated Press, free-agent center Nazr Mohammed has agreed to a deal with the Detroit Pistons. The deal is for five-years with the last year being an option. Nazr Mohammed would make about $5,000,000 next season.
He won’t be able to replace Wallace. Personally, I think it is a knee-jerk reaction by the Detroit Pistons. Mohammed only played in 30 games last season for the San Antonio Spurs and he was so-so. He averaged about 6 points and 5 rebounds per game. The Detroit Pistons are trying to replace a solid player, in Ben Wallace, with a guy, in Nazr Mohammed, that’s bounced around the league over his career and someone that’s never really shinned.
The Pistons will feel the loss of Wallace next season. It looks like they are trying to go to a position by committee type of scenario. The one upside to losing Wallace is the money it frees up. The Pistons will probably make another move before the season starts. The East is pretty weak, so they should still make the playoffs. As for winning a championship, that dream is probably over for now. They will be able to make more moves in the future since their payroll was lightened by the departure of Ben Wallace.
